Long and balanced
This polished Lapis Lazuli freeform from Badakhshan, Afghanistan is the longest of our small freeforms at 11.0 cm. It is 5.4 cm across and 2.5 cm thick, and it weighs 155 grams. The shape is long and rounded, so it has some body and isn’t a flat sliver. The lazurite is fine-grained, deep royal blue and smooth.
Pyrite on a long surface
Gold pyrite appears as veins and flecks along the blue, and the length gives the pattern room to run. The pyrite shows most when the stone is turned under a light. For help judging the pyrite in a piece, see our Afghan Lapis Lazuli buying guide.
Holding and displaying it
It rests on a shelf or in a cabinet and is small enough to pick up with one hand. The long shape also works laid flat or propped on a stand. If Lapis is a gift, our Lapis Lazuli birthstone guide covers what it means.
