A 10 × 8 Inch Polished Lapis Lazuli Face at 6.4 lb
Most large Lapis Lazuli blocks are long and narrow. This polished Lapis Lazuli block from Badakhshan, Afghanistan is wide instead: 25.0 cm by 20.0 cm, about 9.8 × 7.9 inches, which is a little smaller than a sheet of US letter paper. It’s 4.0 cm (1.6 in) thick and weighs 2.9 kg, about 6.4 lb. It stands upright on its own.
The stone is lazurite in an even ultramarine blue, polished to a reflective finish across its main faces. Veins and clouds of gold-coloured pyrite run through the blue. Our Lapis Lazuli collection shows how colour and pyrite change from one piece to the next.
Where it fits
At 6.4 lb it’s easier to place than the heavier blocks. It suits a desk, a mantelpiece or a gallery shelf, as long as the surface can carry the weight. Our polished stone collection has longer and thicker blocks if you’d like to compare shapes. If you’re considering Lapis Lazuli for a December birthday, our Lapis Lazuli birthstone guide explains the connection. Our Lapis Lazuli price guide covers what drives the cost of a piece this size.
